PEEKSKILL FENCING CENTER

Small clubs throughout the country are doing amazing things with children.  We feel that once people try fencing, they will fall in love with it as so many others have."

Peekskill Fencing Center Qualifies Three for the US Fencing National Championships

Another Step Forward for the Little Club that Could

Peekskill, NY (April 26, 2010) – Peekskill Fencing Center will be represented at the 2010 United States Fencing Association Summer Nationals, in Atlanta , Georgia, by four of its students.  Taking divergent paths toward one goal are Kevin Blewitt (Putnam Valley), Elizabeth Feller (Cortlandt Manor), Erika Mendez (Peekskill).

Kevin Blewitt in his first year was able to qualify for the Youth 12 and 14 Men’s Foil Events by placing second in the Westchester-Rockland National Qualifiers finishing with a record of 6-1 in a very tough field.

Elizabeth Feller qualified with a breakout performance at the Qualifiers finishing third and securing a spot in the increasingly tough Youth 14 Women’s Foil event.

In her first season as a competitive fencer Erika has risen in the ranks and is now a perennial favorite at local and regional competitions.   Ms. Mendez has amassed an impressive record at Super Youth Regional Circuit events earning her a place in the USFA National Points List ranking her among the best youth fencers in the nation.   In Atlanta, Ms. Mendez will be competing in the Y10 and 12 Women’s foil events.

“We are a small club in our division, but we are becoming more competitive.  I am very impressed with the strides that our fencers and our club have made in the past year.  It bodes well for fencing at the local and national level that small clubs are getting results like this” says Alex Acevedo, the Director of Peekskill Fencing Center.

The Summer Nationals are to be held in July 4-13, 2010. The largest fencing tournament in the world, it hosts fencers from around the country in 102 events over 10 days and hosts approximately 4,000 individuals that make up nearly 6,000 competitors and over 300 teams.

All the Peekskill competitors are coached by Alex Acevedo, Max Catala, Dave Herrera and Joe Paterno. Acevedo is the director of the Peekskill Fencing Center on Welcher Avenue.

Hello and welcome to the Peekskill Fencing Center, established in 2003, we aim to promote, foster and develop the sport and art of fencing.  Ours is a small club that offers lots of individual attention.

Our members compete in local, regional and national events.  Competative members can advance thier skills by fencing at our club and through private lessons with our instructors.

New fencers are encouraged to enroll at any time.   Fencers are quickly intergrated into the program and an individualized program is designed for them.

The Olympic Visit

Tim Morehouse and Jason Rogers visited Peekskill and spoke at our schools and at our club.  They shared details of their Olympic journey and gave our young people the message that goals, once achieved, should be set higher.   Fencing gives us lessons about life, fairness, honesty, trust in yourself and others, and setting goals.  Tim and Jason explained that their goal was simply to win a medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  Once achieved, Silver in Team Sabre,  a new goal was set: Gold at the 2012 London Olympics.  Good luck boys, Show'em what you got.
