What age can you begin fencing?

Some of our students have started as young as seven.

 

What is the $250 for?

The $250 is a club membership fee.  It helps to maintain the equipment, pay some of the rent and insure and register the club.  Its a modest fee compared to other clubs in the area.

 

Do I have to buy equipment? 

Beginner equipment is provided by the club.  Its clean, safe and it usually fits.  We reccomemnd that you buy equipment when you know that you are serious about fencing.   We will help you select equipment when you are ready.

 

What should I wear?

Fencing is an athletic activity, and athletic attire is recommended.  Participants should wear sneakers, sweat pants or warm-up pants, and a t-shirt.  Shorts are not allowed when doing bladework or sparring.  No sandals.

Am I too old to start fencing?

Fencing can be learned at almost any age, as long as you are reasonable fit.  Many people take up the sport in their twenties, thirties, forties and fifties.

 


What qualities make a good fencer?
On the athletic side, speed and cardiovascular fitness rank foremost.  Other traits that can be exploited are strength (for explosive power, not heavy handedness), manual dexterity, and flexibility.  Quick reaction time is extremely important.  On the mental side, a fencer must be adaptable and observant, and have a good mind for strategy and tactics.

Why do I have to join the US Fencing Association?

We require USFA membership for insurance reasons.  As a USFA member you will receive American Fencing magazine, and be eligible to compete in USFA competitions if you wish.  The USFA also provides insurance to its members.

 

When can I start competition?

Generally, you should have been taking classes for about a year before considering competition.  Age, skill level, and competitive experience in another sport will influence the decision about when to start competing. 

 

What about private lessons?

These lessons are given in order to teach, evaluate and reinforce the students tecnique.  Private lessons are available through our coaches after classes and by appointment.
